Pre-course Student Survey TEMPLATE (external site)
The pre-course survey is designed to help instructors get to know their students to help build community and to help develop positive relationships with students. It also gives students the opportunity to share their concerns, interests, and rationale for taking the course with instructors. The pre-course survey is set to collect student names.
Mid-Term Evaluations
UWSP's student evaluation software is managed by CITL, however evaluation questions are determined by shared governance. Concerns about the evaluation schedule or the list of courses for which you will be evaluated should be communicated to your department chair.
To improve student response rates, CITL recommends that you provide students time in class to complete their evaluations and reinforce the value of completing them.
Handbook policy allows for opt-out of the mid-term evaluation provided instructors have an alternate method of assessing the course at the mid-term.
Small Group Instructional Diagnostic
CITL team members are available to conduct mid-semester student focus groups, called Small Group Instructional Diagnostic (SGID). SGID is a way to gather rich, contextualized information about a course facilitated by a neutral member of the CITL team, and are ideally done between weeks 5 and 9 of the semester. Email CITL to request SGID assistance.
Benefits
- Improved instructor-student communication
- Greater sense of community
- Opportunity to adjust a course for increased student success
How it works
After an initial consultation with a CITL facilitator to learn what you would like to discover through the experience, you would schedule 20 minutes on a usual class day to step out of the room and allow the facilitator to become a “research tool” for you. The facilitator asks your student to have small group discussions about three questions related to learning in your course. Then, the facilitator pulls the smaller groups back into a full class discussion to summarize and clarify feedback. The CITL facilitator will meet with you to review the data collected from your students – written feedback from students’ small group discussions, and the facilitator’s impartial summary of the large group discussion. Together, you will work to interpret the comments to help you decide how you would like to address the student feedback with your class, giving you the chance to adjust and clarify any points of confusion for your students before the end of the term. The feedback collected is shared confidentially only with you as the instructor.
