Pointers Aware of the World (PAW)

Pointers Aware of the World (PAW) will incorporate seven skillsets by creating an Experiential Learning Activity (ELA) option for students. Students will have a chance to complete their ELA requirement by participating in one of the three track options. The three tracks are volunteering, social justice and activism and one-time trips.

Requirements:

  •      15 people per track each semester
  •       Attend pre and post meetings
  •       Complete 16 hours
  •       Attend one other event in a different track (does not apply to one-time trackers)
  •       Attend a career session with the ACAC
  •       Complete a reflection questionnaire after each event
  •       Final project: option of a paper or a presentation
  •       Expected to volunteer and participate (i.e., setting up and taking down) for at least two events


Track Options:

1.   Volunteer Track

    • Through the volunteer track, students will gain a better understanding of community building and civic responsibility offered in the Stevens Point community. Students will be able to find events through a variety of resources such as our office, Volunteers Rock.org, United Way, etc.
    • Mid-semester, students will have to attend one of the three to four meeting options to discuss and debrief of their experiences thus far.

2.   Social Justice and Activism Track

    • Through the social justice and activism track, students will gain a better understanding of issues related to marginalized groups. Students will accomplish this by knowing the different resources available to them, as well as recognizing and reflecting on their privilege to help them become allies in the campus community and beyond.
    • Complete a three question reflection after each event on SPIN
    • Fall events that fit this track include:

- No Gray Week

- Anti-Hazing Week

- Transgender Day of Remembrance

- World AIDS Day

    • Spring events:

- Vagina Monologues

- Love your Body Week

- International Dinner

- BSU Soul Food Dinner

- Out on Film

- Pride Week

- ANAD Week

    • Students can also contact BSU, Veteran's Club, LSA, HASEAAC, GSA E-Board members to attend a meeting, and ask member why they joined, what is the purpose, what are the current issues they are talking about and why they are important.

3.   One-Time Trips

    • Intensive one-time sessions that complete all requirements for the ELA. This is done through an extensive community and environmental interaction such as Inner City Impact or Outdoor Outreach.
