What is the General Education Program?

The General Education Program (GEP) is a part of the liberal education curriculum that is shared by all bachelor-degree seeking students, no matter what major a student chooses at UW-Stevens Point. It provides broad exposure to multiple disciplines and forms the basis for developing important intellectual, civic, and practical capacties. Knowledge and skills you develop through the GEP coursework and experiences provides a strong foundation for your personal and professional development.

The GEP also serves as a great way to explore what interests you most and often can lead to major, minor, and certificate choices!

How do I know what courses meet the GEP requirements?

There are three main areas of the GEP: Foundational Skills and Dispositions, Human Cultures and the Sciences, and Social and Environmental Responsibility. In each of these three areas are different catagories that need to be completed, and each have its own letter designation.

  • Foundational Skills and Dispositions: includes Written Communication (WC), Critical Thinking (CT), Quantitative Literacy (QL) and Wellness (WLN)
  • Human Cultures and the Sciences: includes Arts (ARTS), Humanities (HU), Historical Perspectives (HP), Social Sciences (SS), and Natural Sciences (NSC)
  • Social and Environmental Responsibility: includes Global Awareness (GA), U.S. Diversity (USD), and Environmental Responsibility (ER)
In the course catalog and the schedule of classes in accesSPoint, you will find these GEP letter designations within the course descriptions.

Your chosen major and/or minor may have courses that meet some of the categories within GEP, so read your Degree Progress Report (DPR) carefully and work closely with your academic adviser to know how the courses you are taking meet requirements within the GEP.
