How advisees are transitioned from ACAC to academic departments

Advisees are transitioned from the Academic and Career Advising Center (ACAC) to academic departments throughout the year, but primarily, this process happens over Winter and Summer breaks, after grades have been posted from the previous semester.

What is the process?

  • Each ACAC adviser identifies students on their caseload who are ready to move to a department adviser. This is largely based on the amount of time the student has been advised in ACAC (3 semesters for FYS admits and 1 semester for transfer students).

  • ACAC sends each academic program a list of students that will be transitioning to the department.

  • Department representative (chairs, ADAs, professional advisers) assigns a new adviser within the department and removes the ACAC adviser.

  • Department representative notifies ACAC when their department advisers have been assigned.

  • Once every department has completed the process, ACAC advisers send a personalized email (using first-name), notifying the student that they have been assigned a new adviser and where to find the name and contact information in accesSPoint (in the My Profile tile, under Adviser Information).

Recommended Outreach from Department Adviser

  • ACAC recommends that the academic department representatives share the names of new advisees to the assigned adviser.

  • Department advisers are encouraged to send a welcome message to their new advisees. Message might include:

    • A brief introduction of yourself

    • How to schedule meetings with you

    • General timeline of when you begin registration advising for the next term.

    • Topics, beyond registration, that you would like to discuss with them.
