An alumna of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who heads a nonprofit entrepreneurship organization in Hawaii, will address graduates and their families at the spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 18.
Bee Leng Chua, a 1977 alumna, will speak to 1,346 graduates in four colleges at UW-Stevens Point who have earned associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees and clinical doctorates in audiology. The ceremonies will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the UW-Stevens Point Health Enhancement Center. Each ceremony will last approximately two hours. Guests may park in any campus lot (for free) except Lot F West, which will be used for handicap access.
The student speakers will be Shannon Gildersleeve, a biology major from West Allis, at 9:30 a.m.; and Shellya Rogers, an arts management major from the Caribbean island of Anguilla, at 2 p.m. Chancellor Bernie Patterson will give the welcome and charge to the graduates. New alumni will be welcomed by Mary Wescott, ’75, and David Bruha, ’82, both members of the UW-Stevens Point Alumni Association Board of Directors.
The commencement program will also include seniors Monica DeLoy of Hudson, Peter Heid of Appleton and Risa Tetzlaff of Oshkosh singing the national anthem, with Tetzlaff singing UW-Stevens Point’s alma mater. They will be accompanied by the UW-Stevens Point Concert Band and the UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble.
Chua, a resident of Honolulu, is the executive director of HiBEAM, the Hawaii Business Entrepreneur Acceleration Mentors. The organization helps early stage technology, biotechnology and life science companies with global potential that will fuel Hawaii’s economic growth. Previously she was the first executive director of the Entrepreneur Center at Hawai’i Pacific University and at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Chua was named UW-Stevens Point’s Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Fine Arts & Communication in 2010. While at UW-Stevens Point studying communication, she founded the International Weekend, which later became the annual Portage County Culture Festival. She also earned a master’s and doctorate degree at Ohio University-Athens.
