English '57 Series (Independent Writing)

English '57 allows you to follow your interests. In this class, you decide what to write, and a writing tutor gives you individualized feedback each week. Use your time to enjoy personal writing projects or sharpen your skills. This is a one-credit, pass/fail class.

In this course you can write
  • Short stories
  • Poetry
  • Essays
  • Fan fiction
  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Anything else you want

What to do:

  1. Register for English 157, 257, or 357 via accesSPoint
  2. Attend orientation during the first or second week of classes for initial information, documentation, and schedule.
  3. Write a contracted number of words:
    • 1,500 words for English 157
    • 2,400 words for English 257
    • 3,000 words for English 357​
  4. Meet with a Writing Center Tutor 12 times
  5. At the end of the semester, publish and celebrate your writing with Wordplay, our compilation of student writing. For our archive, click here.

We designed this course to let you grow as a writer and explore your style. We hope you will further develop your ability to express yourself as well as to inform, entertain, and persuade others.
