Reference Department

Whether you need a quick answer to a question, help in searching the online catalog, assistance in researching a paper, or extended instruction in using a particular research tool, our Reference Librarians are here to guide and teach you.

Reference Collection

The Reference Collection contains over 20,000 print and electronic sources. The print collection includes encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, and many other sources. Most reference books may be checked out overnight. Library electronic indexes and databases are accessible from the Reference Room as well as through the campus network. These include the catalog of the UWSP Library and UW System, as well as periodical indexes and some full text databases in many subject areas.

Foundation Collection

The Foundation Collection at the UW-Stevens Point Library is an affiliate of the primary Foundation Center in New York City. The Collection provides information about foundations, corporate giving, fund-raising, nonprofit organizations, and proposal writing. The Foundation Collection does not circulate and is available for anyone who wishes to make use of it during the hours the library is open. Appointments may be made for assistance, contact Nerissa Nelson (715-346-4204).

Library Instruction

Library faculty provide focused library instruction based on the needs of particular classes and disciplines. Library faculty will teach students to use appropriate paper and electronic resources to enable them to do their library research effectively. To schedule instruction, contact Dave Dettman (715-346-4206).

Library Resources 101: Information Literacy Skills for College-Level Research

Library Resources 101 is offered in three sections each semester to introduce students to the UWSP Library and its resources. The course is designed to teach the mechanical and critical thinking skills needed to search for and evaluate information using both paper and electronic sources. Where possible, classroom instruction and assignments are tailored to correspond to the majors, courses, or interests of the students. For more information contact Dave Dettman (715-346-4206).
