The University Libraries is pleased to offer an annual $500 award to a UWSP undergraduate who displays excellence and creativity during the information research process in a writing piece or creative work. 

This award honors John Anderson who was the director of news and publications at UWSP for 27 years. He was a community activist, and a university, local, and state historian who believed in the spirit of community by telling the stories of local people who we may not hear about otherwise. 

Award Amount: $500. Student award winners will also receive a copy of A County Sampler book of selected works by John Anderson (while copies are available).

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate students at UWSP.

Selection Criteria Summary: Interested students will submit examples of their journalistic, written, or other creative work. The application must include a bibliography of works consulted and a short cover letter describing their information research process and why they deserve to be considered for this award.

Additional Criteria: This award is for students who exhibit the ability to apply library or archival research to support a written work, such as an essay, research paper, journal or newspaper article, or other creative work or project that captures a sense of community either about Stevens Point, Wisconsin, a students’ hometown, or a person in a community that may have a unique story. The work must be original, must include a bibliography of sources (e.g., books, articles, newspapers, appropriate websites, archival materials, government documents, etc.), and the essence of community captured through the written work. Students must also agree to have their work included in the UW System Repository, MINDS@UW​

Submission Information: The selected written work you wish to submit must include the following:
  • A cover letter.
  • The work must include a bibliography with a minimum of 6 sources using any style guide format.
  • The font of the work must be readable and include your name, title of work, year in college, your major (if declared), and a contact email address.

Deadline: Application deadline has passed for 2024. The next grant cycle will open in spring 2025. 

Selection ​Process​: Completed applications will be reviewed by a selection committee shortly after the deadline. The turnaround time is approximately two weeks and then a winner will be announced.
