Support the Choir
The David and Cindy Worth Choral Activities Fund
In December, 2007 David and Cindy Worth created a fund to benefit the choral program at UWSP. David, owner of the Worth Company in Stevens Point, and his wife Cindy are both alumni of UWSP’s choirs. Thanks to their generosity, we are able to offer special choral events that provide unique opportunities for current UWSP students and benefit the larger choral community in Wisconsin.
Past activities supported by this fund:
“Brothers, Sing On!” – a day-long event for high school male singers held Jan. 30, 2009. Our guest clinician was Dr. Jerry Blackstone, Chair of the Conducting Department at the University of Michigan. 180 high school men from all over Wisconsin attended rehearsals with Dr. Blackstone, heard the combined men of Choral Union and Concert Choir perform, and attended a mini-recital by UWSP voice faculty tenor Dr. Dennis Willhoit and two outstanding UWSP undergraduate male voice students.
In October, 2008 the Concert Choir was invited, by audition, to perform for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association conference in Madison. The Worth funds were used to pay for the hotel rooms so that the singers didn’t have to pay out of their own pockets.
A three-day residency by Dr. Craig Jessop, the former conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, October 21-23, 2009. Dr. Jessop spoke to music students at the Wednesday department Colloquium and also worked with the beginning conducting class. He also rehearsed and conducted the combined choirs at the UWSP Choirs concert on October 22. On October 23, he rehearsed a High School Honor Choir of 125 singers all day and gave a performance with them that evening. That performance featured accompaniment by several UWSP music faculty and music students.
In the spring of 2011, the Concert Choir went on a five-day concert tour of Puerto Rico which was supported, in part, by the Worth fund. The fund also supported, in part, a three-day residency with Dr. David Frego, an expert in Dalcroze Eurhythmics.
Currently, this fund is guaranteed to be supported by the Worths through December, 2012. We are actively seeking additional contributions from choir alumni, parents of past and current choir members, and any other supporters of choral music at UWSP with the hopes of continuing this fund for years to come. Its creation has had a huge impact on the quality of experiences for UWSP singers and for recruiting new singers for our program.
UPDATE: In the fall of 2013, the Worths made an additional contribution to their fund to help the UWSP Concert Choir pay for a concert tour to Rome and Florence, Italy in March, 2014. While we were in Rome, we participated in the "Festival of Peace and Brotherhood" and sang with choirs around the world in several locations in and around Rome.
