Youth Options Program

What is Youth Options?

The Youth Options Program is an opportunity for Wisconsin public high school juniors and seniors to take one or more courses for high school and college credit at a UW institution, a Wisconsin technical college, or one of the state's participating private or tribally-controlled colleges.

A Youth Options student does not pay tuition for a college course if the school district determines the course qualifies for high school credit and is not equivalent to a course already offered in the school district.

How does a student participate in the Youth Options Program?

Students interested in participating in the program should talk with their high school guidance counselor and the appropriate staff at the postsecondary institution to select an appropriate course (or courses).  Students must notify the school board of their intent to participate in the program by completing the UWSP Youth Options Program Application and submitting it by March 1 for the fall semester, and October 1 for the spring semester.

Students must also apply to the postsecondary institution and comply with all of the institution's admissions standards and application deadlines. Be sure to read the Youth Options Program General Information and Procedures before completing the application.

After I send in the application, how soon will I hear from UW-Stevens Point?

Once a student’s application is complete (application, high school transcripts, and ACT score report), UWSP will review the information and send out a letter to the student and the high school within several weeks.  If accepted, this letter will indicate which courses are offered and approved for the semester.  The letter will also include information on the pre-registration session that all first-time Youth Options students are required to attend.

Do I need to do anything before I register?

Yes - you will need to attend a pre-registration information session.  There will be information about this session in your acceptance letter.

When will I register for my class(es)?

Youth Options students will register AFTER incoming freshman and transfer students.  For the fall semester, this will be in August; for the spring semester, this will be in January.

Am I guaranteed to get into the class(es) I have been approved to take?

No - UWSP is limited in the number of students it may enroll each year, which may affect the ability of Youth Options students to enroll and/or the number of credits for which students will be able to enroll. In the event that space is not available or a student’s preferred course(s) cannot be conveniently scheduled, the student is encouraged to list alternate courses on the application so that the school board is able to determine the acceptability of those course(s) when reviewing the application.
