Sustainable Agriculture

WIST believes that we can all take steps, large and small, to improve our environmental impact. Sustainable, regenerative agriculture looks at agriculture as an ecosystem. Maintaining and enhancing soil quality by using organic agricultural byproducts can offer cleaner approaches to food production, water management, and overall quality of the resulting product.

Though Wisconsin agriculture is widely known for dairy and livestock production, Wisconsin consistently ranks first, second, or third nationally in production of potatoes, snap peas, cranberries and other important root crops. Nationally recognized consumer brands depend on Wisconsin agriculture to feed the nation, and a significant part of central and southern portions of the state depend on agriculture for long-term prosperity and their quality of life.

Area leaders understand the value of sustainable farming practices, and they, along with WIST and area partners, are exploring the challenges and opportunities of implementing of sustainable, regenerative agriculture and navigating community perceptions of agriculture.

As part of its sustainability commitment to the state WIST is examining the current availability of potential compost feedstocks, assessing the feasibility of manufacture of compost, and evaluating the effect of compost applications.
