Dr. Timothy Buchholz is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County where he directs the Concert Choir and two vocal jazz ensembles and teaches classes in ear training and vocal techniques. Originally from Stevens Point, WI, he is a nationally recognized jazz singer, educator, and arranger. As a singer, Tim has performed at Carnegie Hall, New York City's Lincoln Center, and has toured internationally in South Africa, Costa Rica, France, Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Austria, and Belgium. He has performed with many notable artists including Bobby McFerrin, Steve Miller, Bruce Hornsby, Patty Austin, Jon Secada, and Dave Grusin. Tim was named Best Collegiate Jazz Arranger by Downbeat magazine in both 2006-2007 and 2009-2010, and Best Collegiate Jazz Singer in 2005-2006. His arrangements have been published by Sound Music Publications and used throughout the country in high school and college vocal jazz ensembles and for numerous all-state vocal jazz choir events. Dr. Buchholz has previously directed ensembles and taught classes at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, Miami Dade College, and California State University at Long Beach. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Vocal Performance from the University of Miami, a Master of Music degree from California State University at Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University. Dr. Patrick Phalen has been involved in education and music education for over 30 years now. He is currently the Principal at Mountain Bay Elementary School by day and professional musician and educator by night and on the weekends. Dr. Phalen’s education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership from Marion College, a Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance with a jazz emphasis from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and a Doctoral Degree in Education Leadership from Edgewood College in Madison, WI.

As a professional trumpet performer, Dr. Phalen has had the privilege of playing for several Broadway tours including; “Chicago,” “The Producers” and most recently, “Motown.” He has also backed up such artists and groups as The Temptations, Frankie Vallee and the Four Seasons, Burt Bacharach and The Manhattan Transfer.
As an educational leader, Dr. Phalen has led his school, Mountain Bay Elementary School, in receiving a National Blue-Ribbon School Award. This is a distinguished award presented to a select few schools in the entire country based on high achievement and excellence in education. Dr. Phalen also keeps busy in music education by giving jazz and trumpet clinics at the high school and college level.
