Brancel to speak at the UW-Stevens Point WIST event
Ben Brancel, secretary of Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, will provide keynote remarks at a networking breakfast for university, business and civic leaders at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday, October 4.
The 8 a.m. breakfast will be held in the Laird Room of the Dreyfus University Center and opens a half-day research symposium hosted by the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology (WIST) and UW-Stevens Point. The event, Focal Point 2011: Celebrating a year of successful collaborations, includes presentations by ten university faculty and staff engaged in research toward sustainability solutions.
Brancel has served as a leader in a number of agriculture organizations and in the Wisconsin Assembly from 1986-1997. He served an earlier tour as DATCP secretary from 1997-2001, appointed by Gov. Tommy G. Thompson. He was Wisconsin state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Agency from 2001-2009.
WIST biofuels research and the institute’s research into new, value-added uses of agricultural and forest resources aim to boost the state’s economy, areas that intersect with DATCP’s charge to help develop Wisconsin’s growing bio-industry. Focal Point 2011 provides an opportunity to meet and visit with professionals enthusiastic about and actively involved in helping grow Wisconsin’s economy through applied research and new market development.
The event is free but online registration is encouraged to provide name badge information. The registration form and complete event information is on the WIST website, www.uwsp.edu/wist.
