The largest
citizen action in recent state history is the topic of a free, public film
screening and panel discussion at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
next week.
“Wisconsin
Rising” will be shown at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, March 31, in Room 333 of the
Communication Arts Center, 1015 Reserve Street, Stevens Point. The film by Sam
Mayfield documents the 2011 citizen occupation of the state capitol building
and protests in Madison and across the state.
Following the
screening, a panel discussion will be held to talk about the issues that
prompted the occupation, the state’s response and outcomes of the protests.
Panelists will include University Library Associate Professor Nerissa Nelson, English
Professor Rebecca Stephens, Geography Instructor Lisa Theo and John Yaggi of
the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin. The panel will be moderated by Sociology
and Social Work Professor Bob Wolensky. Audience participation is encouraged,
and refreshments will be served.
The event is
sponsored by the Stevens Point Academic Representation Council of UW-Stevens
Point and the Affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers.
