‘Visions of War’ series closes with ‘Operation Homecoming’ documentary

A documentary that illustrates what it’s like for soldiers who return from war will be shown at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as the final event for the “Visions of War” series sponsored by UW-Stevens Point and Mid-State Technical College.

“Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience” will be shown on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. in Room 221 of the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St. The screening will be followed by a reception and panel discussion of local veterans in the center’s Carlsten Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

Described as “beautifully illustrated and emotionally powerful,” the documentary is based on the National Endowment for the Arts Operation Homecoming Initiative. It features interviews with men and women at war as well as actors, such as Robert Duvall and Beau Bridges, reading letters and journal entries by servicemen and women. According to the documentary, veterans “express a profound hope that people will listen to their stories and try to understand what they have seen.”

The “Visions of War” series has featured veterans who have served in World War II, the Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War. The veterans have shared their experiences through art, poetry, film and discussion.

In addition to the screening on Dec. 4, the series’ events include a poetry reading by Brian Turner, an award-winning poet and Iraq War veteran, on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m. in Room 134-136 at Mid-State Technical College. His published works include “Here, Bullet” and “Phantom Noise.”

Dec. 4 will also be the last day to view the exhibit “Visions of War: Artists as Soldiers/Soldiers as Artists” at the Carlsten Gallery in UW-Stevens Point’s Noel Fine Arts Center. The exhibit displays the works of men and women who fought in America’s wars.
