Mozart’s
beloved opera about love and growing up will be performed at the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point by students in the Department of Music next month.
“The
Magic Flute” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, in
Michelsen Hall at the Noel Fine Arts Center.
Tickets
are $19 for adults, $18 for seniors, $14 for youth and $10 for UW-Stevens Point
students. Purchase tickets through University Information and Tickets in the
Dreyfus University Center Concourse, by calling 715-346-4100 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu.
The
production is under the direction of Matthew Markham, assistant professor of
voice, and Kristin Ditlow, a faculty vocal coach at the University of New
Mexico. The opera will be sung in German with supertitles on a screen, with all
the dialogue in English.
The
opera tells the story of characters who take on a quest, aided by a magic flute
and set of bells, in a timeless, imaginary place. The actors will wear
Edwardian and Victorian era costumes.
“Our
production will emphasize the theme of ‘growing up,’ by taking elements from
the classic tale of Peter Pan,” said Markham. “Both children and adults will
relate to it.”
The
vocal music program has a large pool of talent, Markham said, so the two
performances will feature two casts. Students also designed the costumes,
lighting, set and makeup for the production.
Ditlow,
the music director, has made an arrangement for flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon,
piano, timpani and glockenspiel which will feature additional UW-Stevens Point
music students. The university’s production will be the premier of this
version, Markham said.
