A historic piece of music that requires increased energy and technical skill from musicians will be performed by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Symphony Orchestra in a concert with the university's Wind Ensemble.

The orchestra will perform Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, a 30-minute piece that director Andy Moran, assistant professor of horn, calls "gripping for audiences." The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center.

The Wind Ensemble will open the concert, performing the first movement from Serenade No. 11 in E-flat Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "A Western Fanfare" by Eric Ewazen, "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen and "Blue Shades" by Frank Ticheli. The ensemble is directed by Assistant Professor Michael Butler.

Moran is new to UW-Stevens Point this fall and also performs as a principal horn with the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. He previously served as the resident director of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and its youth orchestras.

"I'm enjoying my first university position and working with the students at UW-Stevens Point," Moran said. "I can't think of a more thrilling first piece to perform with the orchestra than Beethoven's Fifth Symphony."

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and staff members and youth. Tickets are free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available.
