Several special
guests will join a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point professor of music to
mark his last concert as conductor of the university’s Symphony Orchestra this
month.
Patrick Miles,
director of orchestral activities, will retire in May. His final concert will
be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts
Center. It will feature a world premiere piece, “Fanfare for the Open Road” by
Miles’ friend and composer Charles Barnett.
Guest performers
will include Miles’ brother, Dan, and four alumni who learned under Miles
during their undergraduate studies at UW-Stevens Point: Brenda Luchsinger, ‘04,
Sadie Glass, ‘11, Adam Krings, ‘11, and Renee Millar, ‘13.
“It is on both a sad and happy note that I conduct
my final concert with the UW-Stevens Point Symphony Orchestra,” said Miles. “The
students and faculty have worked diligently the past 27 years to make this
ensemble a cornerstone of the department. What better way to share my farewell
than with the students whom I love, a few of my many terrific alumni and my
brother, who has been such a wonderful influence on me these many
decades.”
In addition to “Fanfare,” the concert will include
Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A Major by Mozart featuring Dan Miles on
clarinet, Konzertstücke for Four Horns and Orchestra by Robert Schumann with the four alumni
on horn, and “Pines of Rome” by Respighi.
Miles has taught
at UW-Stevens Point since 1989 and is also the music director for the Central
Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO). He has performed as a hornist with
symphonies across the United States, Europe and Asia and served as a conductor
for symphonies in Green Bay and Wausau. Previously he taught at Iowa State
University, Oregon State University and Grinnell College. In retirement, Miles
will continue directing the CWSO as well as travel with his wife, Mary Jo
Patton.
