Students and student groups honored at UW-Stevens Point

A commitment to excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has brought students and student groups the following recognitions: 

  • The UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble was one of ten programs selected as one of the finest small school wind ensembles in the nation by the College Band Directors National Association. Directed by Assistant Professor of Music Michael Butler, the group was featured in the association's Small Band Program Showcase at its 2017 national conference in March.
  • UW-Stevens Point's Fly Fishing Club was among five outstanding clubs recognized for outreach and education in the fall semester through the Five Rivers League of Trout Unlimited fly-fishing groups, sponsored in part by Costa Del Mar sunglasses company. The club has held several outreach programs for the campus and community, including fly tying and casting workshops, volunteer stream clean ups and fishing trips. Club President Jake Bulitz, a fish and water resources major from Elkhart Lake, Wis., serves as the club's Costa ambassador.
  • Jessica Becker, a dietetics and Spanish major from Greenville, Wis., was named the 2017 Wisconsin Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Outstanding Dietetics Student from a didactic Program in Dietetics. She will receive the award in April at the Wisconsin Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics conference.
  • Two students were honored at the 2017 Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference. Lisa Zoromski, a wildlife ecology research and management major from Appleton, was named the Wildlife Undergraduate Student of the Year and won the Aldo Leopold Undergraduate Scholarship from the Wisconsin chapter of The Wildlife Society. Benjamin Tjepkes, a wildlife ecology research and management major from Detroit Lakes, Minn., won the Janice Lee Fenske Memorial Award for Outstanding Students.
  • Rachel Konkle, a wildlife ecology and management and communications major from Sauk City, won the Best Undergraduate Presentation for the second year in a row at the Wisconsin chapter of The Wildlife Society meeting in March.
  • Alex Thomas, a soil and waste resources major from Appleton, received the Outstanding Achievement in Waste Reduction and Recycling Student Award from the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin at the 2017 Wisconsin Integrated Resource Management Conference in Elkhart Lake, Wis., in March. 
  • Two students were honored at the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Fisheries Society held in Milwaukee on February 28 – March 2. Doug Zentner, a natural resources graduate student from North Branch, Minn., won the Steve Yeo Best Paper Award for "Using GIS to Predict Nearshore Substrate Composition in Lakes." Benjamin Schleppenbach, a fisheries and water resources major from Stoughton, won the best poster award for "Genetic Origin of Walleye Stocked in the Manitowish Chain of Lakes, Vilas County, Wis.
