UW-Stevens Point composition students honored

Music students studying composition at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point received honors and recognition in both local and international competition, and by having their original compositions performed.

Sophomore Sebastian Petak of Fond du Lac received an Honorable Mention at the International Harpsichord Competition for his composition titled “Industrial Times.” The piece will be included at the Southeastern and Midwestern Historic Keyboard Societies joint conference in March, where the audience will vote for their favorite pieces and help choose the winning compositions. Petak will also have a wind ensemble work read by the UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble this year.

Brent Platta of Seymour, a senior in the program, composed a fanfare performed by the UW-Stevens Point Concert Band. Another fanfare, by senior Mike Kowbel of Racine, was also performed by the UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble. Annella Kochanowski of Junction City, who graduated last December, performed her original compositions in her senior recital.

Original wind ensemble compositions by freshman Peter Breden of Marshfield, sophomore Alex Shuffield of Sparta and junior Alexandria Mueller of Stevens Point will be performed by the UW-Stevens Point Wind Ensemble this year. Mueller and senior Jacob Schroeder of West Bend will also have original compositions performed in spring by the UW-Stevens Point Campus Band.
