Enjoy a playful new adaptation of Jane Austen's classic, "Sense and Sensibility," staged by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Department of Theatre and Dance Feb. 28-29 and March 1 and 4-7.
"Sense and Sensibility" will be performed in Studio Theatre in the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29, and Wednesday through Saturday, March 4-7. Three matinee shows will be offered at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, Sunday, March 1, and Saturday, March 7. The Sunday, March 1, show will be preceded by a talk with the director at 1 p.m. in NFAC Room 221.
The play centers on the Dashwood sisters, sensible Elinor (Josephine Van Ert, Rochester, Minn.) and emotional Marianne (Elena Cramer, Waukesha), who try to find stability when they are left destitute after their father dies. This version, while set in the original late 18th century England, differs from the novel in that a chorus of gossips moves the story along.
"This story is incredibly energetic, touching and laugh-out-loud funny," said guest director Erin Eggers, a freelance director who works nationally as well as regularly at Spring Green's American Players Theatre. "It is relatable to today in that the audience will see themselves in the characters."
The sisters' close relationship is key to the story, she added. While their personalities are different, they realize how they must become a bit like the other in order to find happiness.
Audiences will enjoy period costumes as well as live music and dancing as part of the show, which has a cast of 18 students playing 30 different characters.
