Mark
Earth Week and spring this April by learning about the plants, animals and
people of Portage County through free, public programs at the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve.
Taught by UW-Stevens Point students, the programs are offered at the reserve’s
Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. Dress for the weather.

Frogs are Back…Back Again!, Tuesday,
April 5, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Discover the songs and adaptations of resident frogs at
the reserve and in other neighborhoods.

Butterfly Survival Guide, Thursday, April
14, 6-7 p.m. Learn how delicate butterflies have survived over the years.
·
The Schmeeckle Buzz, Saturday, April 16,
2-3 p.m. The native bees in Schmeeckle Reserve have a big role to play in the
future of our food and flowers. Find out how they defend themselves against
everyday threats.

Little Green Aliens, Monday, April 18,
6-7 p.m. Non-native plant species are growing around the reserve and our area.
What can be done to stop these plant invaders?

It’s Not Her Birthday, It’s Earth Day, Wednesday,
April 20, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Find out the role Wisconsin played in the creation of
Earth Day and what role you can play today and in the future. Create a
recyclables-to-treasure art activity at the end of the program.

Springtime Star Party, Thursday, April
21, 7-8:30 p.m. Celebrate the night sky with an evening of storytelling and
stargazing before the springtime meteor showers.

If Those Stones Could Talk, Sunday, April
24, 2-3 p.m. Listen to the stories that gravestones can tell about our
community during a walk through a historic cemetery. Meet at St. Peter’s
Cemetery on Old Wausau Road along the Wisconsin River. Park on the west side of
the road.

Wisconsin’s Early Explorers, Wednesday,
April 27, 6-7 p.m. The life of a voyageur including carrying a 90-pound pack
over rugged terrain and paddling until your arms ached. Meet at the Skateboard
Park in Bukolt Park to learn about the lives of past explorers.

The Deer of Schmeeckle, Thursday, April
28, 6:30-7:30 p.m. What makes the deer in Schmeeckle Reserve so friendly, and
how does this affect them?
