Schmeeckle Reserve offers nature programs

Enjoy the fall season and learn about the world around you at several nature programs offered this month at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Schmeeckle Reserve.

Taught by UW-Stevens Point students, the free programs meet at the reserve’s Visitor Center,

Program offerings in October include:

  • Surviving a Wisconsin Winter: Imitating the Animals, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 5:30-6:30 p.m. As the seasons change, animals have unique ways of overcoming the trials of a Wisconsin winter. Enjoy a stroll through these creatures’ habitats while discovering their preparations. Dress for the weather.
  • Depending on the Acorn…, Thursday, Oct. 13, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Oak trees, animals and history rave about acorns. Come enjoy a nutty walk to discover Schmeeckle Reserve’s favorite nut. Dress for the weather.
  • Creatures of the Deep, Tuesday, Oct. 18, 5:30-6:30 p.m. During the summer, Lake Joanis is buzzing with life. What happens when the weather begins to change? Find out where all the creatures of the deep go and what they do to prepare for Wisconsin winter.
  • Wondrous Witch Hazel: Pharmacy of the Forest, Thursday, Oct. 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Discover one of the latest flowering plants in Wisconsin, witch hazel, and its multiple medicinal remedies.
  • The Fungi of Schmeeckle: The Good, the Bad, the Poisonous, Friday, Oct. 21, 4-5 p.m. Explore the often overlooked world of fungi at the reserve. Discover the fungi’s role, types of fungi toxins and both beneficial and harmful species. Dress for the weather.
  • Snags: Schmeeckle Dead Tree Realty, Saturday, Oct. 22, 2-3 p.m. Explore Schmeeckle’s own parade of homes as snags. Join an open house of homes, hideouts and hotspots inhabited by animals. Participants will meet at the main entrance to the Moses Creek Restoration at the intersection of Wood Lane and North Point Drive, with parking available on Wood Lane. Dress for the weather.
  • Fall Candlelight Hike Festival, Friday, Oct. 28, 6:30-9:30 p.m. With a theme of “Stormy Weather at Schmeeckle,” the fall hike festival includes an interactive program on lightning, clouds and rain at 7 and 8 p.m., a one-mile walk along a jack-o’-lantern lit path in the woods, storm discovery stations, crafts, a tour of the Schmeeckle weather station, snacks and free door prizes. There is a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 per family.
