Learn more about natural areas, animals and seasonal traditions this November through free programs at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Schmeeckle Reserve.
Taught by UW-Stevens Point students, these programs meet at the reserve's Visitor Center, located at 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, unless otherwise noted. For more information, call 715-346-4992 or go to www.uwsp.edu/cnr/schmeeckle. Dress for the weather, as some programs are outdoors.
November programs include:
- Halloween Exposed!, Tuesday, Nov. 1, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Unmask the traditions of Halloween while wearing a costume.
- What's the Dirt?, Thursday, Nov. 3, 5:15-6:15 p.m. Get your hands dirty to explore how rocks, animals, plants and water work together in soil.
- Wisconsin Winter Warriors, Saturday, Nov. 5, 3-4 p.m. Learn how Schmeeckle Reserve residents adapt to survive and thrive through the winter months.
- Batty about Bats, Sunday, Nov. 6, 1-2 p.m. Find the answers to common questions about the life of bats.
- Awesome Possum! Thursday, Nov. 10, 5:15-6:15 p.m. Discover how opossums are like dinosaurs during a walk in Schmeeckle Reserve.
- Hidden Hairy Folk, Saturday, Nov. 12, 1-2 p.m. Many elusive mammals make Schmeeckle their home. How many will you find while walking the trails?
- Tales of the Night, Thursday, Nov. 17, 6-7 p.m. Explore Schmeeckle Reserve in the dark as you hear the tale, "How Night Came into Being," then enjoy hot chocolate and an activity.
- Life of a Garter Snake, Saturday, Nov. 19, 1-2 p.m. Garter, or grass snakes, are the most common snakes in the reserve. How does the world look through their eyes?
- Winter is Snow Joking Matter, Sunday, Nov. 20, 3-4 p.m. Warm up at the Schmeeckle Visitors Center while learning about the snow, ice and frost that decorate our winters.
- Happy Harvest, Monday, Nov. 21, 6-7 p.m. Explore harvest traditions while sipping apple cider and making crafts.
- Amazing Prairies, Tuesday, Nov. 22, 6-7 p.m. Prairie ecosystems need help. What are the benefits of prairies and how can you add one to your backyard?
- Why Fly?, Tuesday, Nov. 29, 6-7 p.m. Find out where central Wisconsin birds go when they migrate and discover the sacrifice, perseverance and preparation they need for this journey.
