Schmeeckle Reserve offers nature programs

Enjoy the fall season and learn about the world around you at several nature programs offered this month at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Schmeeckle Reserve.

Program offerings in November include:

  • Lost in the Woods, Sat., Nov. 12, 2–3 p.m. What should you do when lost in the woods? Practice basic skills such as fire starting and shelter building that will help you survive. Dress for the weather.

  • Wanted: Dead or Alive, Tues., Nov. 15, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Discover Wisconsin’s trapping tradition and hear stories and tops. Disarm the jaws of steel and discover how to bait a critter.

  • Underground Discoveries, Wed., Nov. 16, 5:30–6:30 p.m. Explore fossils found in Wisconsin by digging in the sand and creating a better understanding of ancient creatures.

  • Wonder Bark, Sat., Nov. 19, 2–3 p.m. The unique bark of birch trees has been used for medicine, tools and traditions. Hear some lore, see its uses and take home ideas for your own birch bark designs.

  • The Twoubles and Techniques of Twacking, Sun., Nov. 20, 4–5 p.m. Join guest speakers Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny as they discover the history and frustrations of tracking and the techniques wildlife use to hide. Dress for the weather.

  • Myths of the Night Sky, Tues., Nov. 22, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Experience a fun night of stories and myths about how the constellations got their names.

  • Harvest Traditions of Today and Yesterday, Tues., Nov. 29, 6–7 p.m. Discover how we and how animals use harvest time to prepare for winter.
