Schmeeckle Reserve offers nature programs

Appreciate the beauty of winter through several nature programs offered this month at Schmeeckle Reserve on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus.

Taught by UW-Stevens Point students, the free programs meet at the reserve’s Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. For more information, call 715-346-4992 or go to www.uwsp.edu/cnr/schmeeckle.

Program offerings in December include:

  • Terrifying Turtles, Sat., Dec. 3, 5–6 p.m. Take an in-depth look at the terrifying, mysterious and misunderstood turtle, with a chance to meet some turtle friends.
  • Tree Creations, Sun., Dec. 4, 1–2 p.m. Take a hike in Schmeeckle Reserve and explore the beauty of winter, identify common trees and create unique artistic pieces. There will be a small gallery to display local artists’ winter artwork. Dress for the weather.
  • Little Poland of Central Wisconsin, Tues., Dec. 6, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Discover Portage County’s Polish heritage by exploring its influence on the area and its holiday traditions.
  • Fake Lake, Sat., Dec. 10, 2–3 p.m. Discover the truth about man-made lakes and get hands-on experience in the construction process of developing a lake.
