Considered
one of his greatest works, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Op. 125, will be offered
in two performances at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this month,
featuring the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir and Choral Union and
professional, alumni soloists.
Also
known as “The Choral,” the work will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and
Friday, Nov. 19-20, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center.
Soloists will include UW-Stevens Point alumni Mary Southworth,
soprano, a 1992
graduate and adjunct instructor at the University of Cincinnati
College-Conservatory of Music; Holly Janz, mezzo-soprano, a 1993 graduate and
associate professor at Concordia College; and Scott Ramsay, tenor, last
attended in 1996 and now a professional singer. Jacob Lassetter, bass,
assistant professor of music at Luther College, will also perform.
The
Symphony Orchestra is led by Music Professor Patrick Miles, conductor of the
ensemble and director of orchestral activities at UW-Stevens Point. Lucinda
Thayer, professor of music and director of choral activities, leads the choirs.
A part of
the Music Department Scholarship Series, the concert is $8.25 for the public,
$5.25 for senior citizens, $4.25 for youth and students. Tickets are free the
day of the concert for UW-Stevens Point students with I.D. Tickets are
