studies reveal one in four college women report surviving rape or attempted

As a
part of its commitment to fostering a safe, productive learning environment,
the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will partner with the city of Stevens
Point, Portage County and victim services groups in declaring April as Sexual
Assault Awareness Month and hosting several free, public awareness events.
The
kickoff will be held Monday, April 4, at 1 p.m. with the campus portion of
Fourth Avenue declared “Teal Street” for the month. Chancellor Bernie
Patterson, Mayor Mike Wiza and Jessica King, Portage County victim advocate
with CAP Services' Sexual Assault Victim Services will speak. The event will be
held at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Reserve Street.
On
Thursday, April 7, a resource panel will be held at 5 p.m. at Collins Classroom
Center Room 321. It will include representatives from UW-Stevens Point’s Dean
of Students, Protective Services, Counseling Center and the Promoting Awareness
Victim Empowerment (PAVE) student organization as well as Portage County’s
Sexual Assault Victim Services (SAVS) and District Attorney’s Office and the
Stevens Point Police Department.
The
film “The Hunting Ground” will be screened at 5 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12,
at the Dreyfus University Center Theater. A discussion led by Dean of Students
Troy Seppelt and representatives from PAVE, SAVS and the Counseling Center will
follow the screenings.
On
Monday, April 18, a “Know Your IX” discussion will be held at 6 p.m. in the
Dreyfus University Center Laird Room. Pam Dollard, director of Human Resources
and Affirmative Action and the Title IX coordinator, and Seppelt, a deputy
Title IX coordinator, will discuss the requirements for Title IX for colleges
and universities as it relates to sexual assault.
On
Wednesday, April 27, campus and community members are encouraged to join others
across the country by wearing denim to raise awareness of rape and sexual
assault. Learn more about national “Denim Day” at http://denimdayinfo.org.
Also
on April 27, a Take Back the Night event will be held at 5 p.m. in the Dreyfus
University Center Encore Room.
“Sexual
violence can undermine students’ academic success,” said Seppelt. “We encourage
students who have experienced some form of sexual misconduct to talk to someone
so they can get the support they need.”
