Fourteen University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students and their advisers will be among more than 130 undergraduates from around the University of Wisconsin System to exhibit their research at the state capitol building next week, while another will present his research at the U.S. capital later this month.

The UW System’s 13th annual “Posters in the Rotunda” event will be held in Madison Wednesday, April 13. Elected officials, UW System Board of Regents and others will have the opportunity to view poster presentations of the research projects and speak with the students. More information is at www.wisconsin.edu/posters.

The following students will present their research:

  • Victoria Nellessen of Bartlett, Ill., a senior wildlife ecology major, worked with Assistant Professor of Biology Sarah Jane Alger. Her research studies the bond between captive zebra finch pairs and how it relates to reproductive success.

  • Michael Marichal of Appleton and Alan Bustamante of Stevens Point, both senior history and international studies majors, worked with History and International Studies Associate Professor Valerie Barske to research the evolution of Japanese nationalism since the 1930s.

  • Neil Foegen, a senior geoscience and hydrogeology major from Appleton, worked with Chemistry Associate Professor Jason D’Acchioli as well as students at Princeton University. Their research was on finding the oxidation states of transition metals.

  • Zak Driscoll, a senior pre-medicine major from Oxford, worked with Associate Professor Nate Bowling on using organic chemistry in the design of modern electronics.

  • Senior athletic training majors Jamie Destache of Sussex, Chelsie Harrison of Wonewoc, Valerie Mielke of Green Bay, Madalyn Sawdey of Medford and Sarah Vitale of Lake Elmo, Minn., worked in a research group studying how sport specialization affects lower extremity biomechanics and injury risk. Their adviser was Associate Lecturer Beth Kinslow.

  • Senior athletic training majors Samuel Joswiak of Weston, Nick Lemke of Medford, Ramona Marquardt of Stevens Point and Sarah Pettit of Elmwood Park worked in a research group that studied the effects of carbohydrate consumption versus water for athletes in endurance tests. The group’s adviser was Associate Lecturer Beth Kinslow.

UW-Stevens Point junior biochemistry major Joseph Grosskopf of Waupaca will also represent the university at the 20th Annual Posters on the Hill in Washington D.C. April 19-20. His research, “A Novel Method of Analysis of Pierce’s Disease Resistance of Grapevines,” was developed with Associate Professor of Biology Qiang Sun.
