Summer planetarium shows at UW-Stevens Point
Get up close and personal with the stars and planets this summer at the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Two programs will be offered in June and July at 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Both shows are open to the public, free of charge.
“MarsQuest” will be shown at 8 p.m. on the Mondays of June 11, 18 and 25 and the Wednesdays of July 11, 18 and 25. The show offers a close look at the planet nearest Earth, with narration by Patrick Stewart of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Viewers will see both a historic and futuristic view of Mars, including images from the Hubble space telescope, information from the Viking 1 and 2 landings and possible future missions to Mars.
“Bad Astronomy: Myths and Misconceptions” will be shown at 8 p.m. on the Wednesdays of June 13, 20, 27 and the Mondays of July 2, 9, 16 and 23. The show takes a unique approach to debunking myths and misconceptions of space, as explained by “bad astronomer” Phil Plait.
The planetarium doors open one-half hour before the scheduled programs. Designed for a general audience, planetarium programs appeal to all age groups. Seating is first come, first served for up to 70 people. Groups of 15 or more may schedule a special showing of any planetarium program by calling Randy Olson at 715-346-2208. There is a cost of $15 per group for these presentations.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building at the corner of Reserve Street and Fourth Avenue. Parking is available in Lot X near the building entrance, and is free in all university lots after 7 p.m.
The planetarium will close July 26 and resume programming in mid-September. The observatory is closed during the summer months and will also resume its public programs in mid-September.
