St. Louis Brass Quintet to perform in Stevens Point

A spectrum of brass sounds, from jazz standards to Baroque music, will be performed by the St. Louis Brass Quintet on Monday, Nov. 14, as part of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Performing Arts Series.

One of America’s longest standing brass quintets, the St. Louis Brass Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Theater@1800 at Sentry Headquarters, 1800 North Point Drive, Stevens Point.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and $6 for youth. UW-Stevens Point students with ID may buy tickets in advance for $4.50 or be admitted free the day of the show if seats remain. Tickets may be purchased through the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted.

The St. Louis Brass Quintet offers an entertaining variety of brass music, including popular American tunes, Baroque and Renaissance music transcribed for modern instruments, jazz standards, lighthearted pieces for narrator and brass, and a tongue-in-cheek survey of the history of brass instruments. Its members compose many of the group’s pieces.

Originally formed by members of the St. Louis Symphony to play children’s concerts around St. Louis, the quintet soon expanded to full-length concerts funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Missouri Arts Council and the Mid-America Arts Alliance. Forty years and more than 2,500 engagements later, the quintet still has one original member, trombonist Melvyn Jernigan, who also resides in St. Louis. Other members hold top positions in orchestras across the U.S.

The quintet has recorded two LPs, six CDs and one DVD, and has performed 75 pieces written or arranged specifically for their use. The group performs three ten-day concert tours throughout the U.S. each year with additional time for recording and international tours. They have been featured in tours and festivals in Norway, India, Japan, Mexico, Germany and Sweden.
