Jesse Nummelin

Senior at UW-Stevens Point to record professional album

A student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has received an offer to record music in a professional studio as part of a jazz trio.

Jesse Nummelin, a senior music major studying music performance, spent part of his summer at a cello camp in Vermont performing in a trio with a pianist from Julliard and a violinist from the Boston Conservatory. Through the camp’s coordinator, the trio was approached by an architect and philanthropist who was so taken with their performances that he has offered the newly formed trio the opportunity to travel to Boston and record in a professional studio in November.

“This feels so surreal. It is every musician’s dream—play the music they love with other musicians, make an album and actually have people enjoy it,” said Nummelin. “We have a benefactor, as well as a world-class cellist, camp director Allison Eldridge, who are saying they’ll help us.”

Nummelin of Stevens Point has been involved with music programs at UW-Stevens Point since he was four years old, studying the cello with Professor Lawrence Leviton at the Aber Suzuki Center and continuing his studies through high school. He also studied with Tim Mutschlecner, now with the Aber Suzuki Center. In addition to the cello, Nummelin also studies voice and saxophone. He participated in theatre in high school, played in the Central State Symphony Orchestra, played chamber music and also performed in church orchestras and choirs.

At UW-Stevens Point, Nummelin has served as principal cello in the Symphony Orchestra, has played for Theatre & Dance Department musicals, performed in operas and sung in choirs. He currently plays in the Central Wisconsin Symphony and is a member of the CWSO Scholarship Quartet.
