Museum of Natural History to debut renovations at Fall Celebration
New and renovated exhibits and an expanded gift shop will be featured when the Museum of Natural History at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point holds its Fall Celebration open house on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Open to the public free of charge, like the museum itself, the Fall Celebration will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Student employees will be on hand to answer questions and escort visitors through the exhibits.
Since it opened on campus in 1968, the UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History has made numerous additions and renovations. Over the last six months, several new features have been added, including a rearranged and relocated northern raptor display. A community favorite, the Schoenbeck egg exhibit has been upgraded and relocated, and there is new interactive access to the Menominee Clans display. The gift shop has also been remodeled and features more souvenirs, apparel and nature-themed gifts.
“Our museum has undergone quite a facelift over the summer, with several renovated and relocated exhibits, installation of energy-efficient lighting and an expanded museum shop that carries science and nature-related apparel, gifts, field guides, souvenirs and more,” said Museum Director Ray Reser. “The museum continues to increase the quality and quantity of its permanent and rotating exhibits, broadening the opportunities for students and the larger community to be exposed to the natural sciences and increasing our knowledge of the natural world and our place within it.”
Current rotating exhibits on display include Butterflies of the World, Wisconsin Insects and an array of 39- to 54-million-year-old Eocene fossils of both fish and insects collected by UW-Stevens Point students and faculty. Upcoming exhibits will portray touch specimens of various rocks and minerals from around Wisconsin, including diagnostic fossils and displays developed from an extensive collection of Native American artifacts.
The UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History is an outreach and educational facility aligned with the College of Letters and Science. It is the only public natural history museum in north central Wisconsin. The museum exhibits are located on the first floor of the University Library and may be viewed during regular library hours, which are Monday–Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Metered parking is located in Lot R, which is accessible from Portage or Reserve streets.
