More than 20,000 square feet of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s floor space is dedicated to museum collections.

Enjoy free public access to these scientific research and teaching collections of animals, fish, plants and prehistoric specimens during the third annual “Collection Crawl” at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, March 10.

Offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the collection crawl is hosted by the Museum of Natural History at UW-Stevens Point and includes collections housed within and beyond the museum, including the Freckmann Herbarium. Students will be available to provide information and answer questions for the families, students, community members and visitors who attend. Participants can pick up free passports and collect stamps for up to ten locations throughout campus.

In addition to the museum exhibits, access will be available for the following collections: entomology (insects), geology (rocks), herbarium (plants), herpetology (amphibians and reptiles), ichthyology (fish), mammalogy (mammals), ornithology (birds), paleontology (prehistoric life) and parasitology (parasites).

“The research and teaching collections at UW-Stevens Point represent an amazing cross section of global and Upper Great Lakes regional natural history specimens from multiple fields of science. Utilizing the depth and breadth of these collections for current and future research allows citizens of the state and beyond a chance to truly understand many aspects of the natural world. The conservation and curation of these irreplaceable collections for not only scientific study, but for our children and grandchildren as well, is part of the museum’s mission, and a charge our curators take very seriously,” noted Ray Reser, museum director.
