UW-Stevens Point bands to celebrate jazz greats

The music of jazz greats, including three who would be 100 this year, will be featured in a concert of the Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this month.

The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center.

The Jazz Band will perform "Cute" by Neal Hefti, "No More Blues" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "Too Many Things" by Don Grolnick, "Lament" by J.J. Johnson, "Eye of the Hurricane" by Herbie Hancock and "Harlem Airshaft" by Duke Ellington. David Hastings, professor of saxophone and music theory, directs the band. 

The Jazz Ensemble will mark the centennials of Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Tadd Dameron with the pieces "Salt Peanuts," "Bemsha Swing" and "Ladybird." The group will also play "Blue Highways" by Paul Ferguson, "All of Me" by Simons/Marks and "The Art of Darkness" by James Miley. Mathew Buchman, professor and director of Jazz Studies, directs the ensemble.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out.
