An upcoming Jazz Band concert at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will feature favorites by legendary composers from the 1940s to present day.

The concert will be held Tuesday, Nov. 22, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. Directed by Professor David Hastings, the band is the second largest ensemble in the Jazz Studies area. It includes a traditional big band setting of five saxophones, five trombones (with the occasional tuba), four trumpets and a rhythm section with piano, bass, vibraphone and drums.

The Jazz Band will perform Lionel Hampton's classic "Flyin' Home," arrangements of standards such as Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark" and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Darn That Dream," and the original compositions "Us," "Blues for Alfy" and "Bless Johnny" that honor saxophonist Johnny Hodges. The band will also perform "The Maids of Cadiz" from the Miles Davis recording "Miles Ahead" and "I Ain't Gonna Ask No More," featuring music education and performance student Sam Erickson on tuba.

Concert tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and staff members and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds support UW-Stevens Point music scholarships.
