The legacy of excellence continues at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, with the following being recognized for achievement:

  • Stephanie Schlegel, a graphic design student from Plover (and graduate of Stevens Point Area Senior High School), received a Gold ADDY Award for her book art, “Fashion Forward,” at the 2013 American Advertising Federation District Eight awards competition in Minneapolis, Minn. The piece will be exhibited and will compete within the national ADDY awards in Phoenix, Ariz., in June.

  • Four UW-Stevens Point senior forestry students were chosen as summer interns by the Society of Municipal Arborists. Thomas Steele, Spring Green; Gary Tellefson, Edgerton; Michael Zalewski, Antigo; and Alex Estelmann, Madison; were among 11 interns chosen from a national, competitive pool of 29 applicants. They will spend 10 weeks working with mentor arborists in municipal forestry programs chosen from across the country.

  • Members of the UW-Stevens Point Woodland Sports team successfully defended their championship for the third year in a row at the Midwestern Forester’s Conclave in April at Michigan State University. Ben Hansen, a forestry major from Milladore, was the Stihl Collegiate Midwest Qualifier for the second consecutive year, and he will compete for the national title in June in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Conclave participants included seven women and 14 men from UW-Stevens Point, competing in crosscut sawing, wood chopping, axe throwing and log rolling as well as academic events such as tree and wood identification and inventory techniques.

  • Tom Charlesworth, a campus photographer and media specialist with University Relations and Communications, recently received five awards from the University Photographers Association of America in monthly image competitions. He won first place for a photo of an eagle in flight, second place for graphic design image on paparazzi; third for a close-up of an agate, fifth place for an underwater photo of a spotted eagle ray and sixth place for a photo of UW-Stevens Point biology student Nigel Golden.

  • UW-Stevens Point has been designated as a 2012 Tree Campus USA, having met five core standards for effective campus forest management: a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for campus trees, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. Tree Campus USA is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota Motor North America Inc.
