Learn more about the Hmong culture in our community at a
conference and enjoy a concert sponsored by the Hmong and Southeast Asian
American Club at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.
Themed “From Hmong to Hmong American,” the conference
will be held Saturday, March 8, in the Alumni Room in the Dreyfus University
Center. Registration begins at 11:15 a.m., with a welcome at noon. The public
may attend free of charge, and may register at http://stuorgs.uwsp.edu/HaSEAAC/pages/home.aspx.
Following the conference, a
benefit concert, “Our Voice, Our World: Our Sisters” will be held at 7 p.m. in
the Laird Room of the Dreyfus University Center. All proceeds will go to
VivNcaug, Laos, an organization that helps create jobs and opportunities for
women in Southeast Asia. Maa Vue, David Yang, the Fisherman’s Project and several
other performers will be featured.
Concert tickets are $8 for
adults and free for children 10 and under. Tickets may be purchased through
University Information and Tickets in the Dreyfus University Center concourse

The conference will include a
showing of the recently released documentary, “Finding the Middle Way,” at 3
p.m. A collaboration of Hmong and non-Hmong community members and UW-Stevens
Point faculty and students, the film was created to build understanding and
awareness about the Hmong people of Portage County.
Vincent K. Her, an associate professor of anthropology at the
University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, will give a keynote address, followed by a
discussion panel that includes Her and southeast Asian UW-Stevens
Point students.
