Area
businesses and nonprofit organizations looking for University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point student help this summer and fall can be reimbursed as
part of a grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.
Community
partners are being sought through the Career Ready Internship Program, which
offers paid internships for UW-Stevens Point juniors and seniors with unmet
financial need. As an incentive for regional employers, the Great Lakes grant
reimburses their student wages at the end of the internships. Employers must
meet program-specific qualifications.
“UW-Stevens
Point students are eager to apply specialized knowledge from their majors and
minors to real life situations,” said Kathy Davis, dean of the University
College. “They come from diverse backgrounds and have many different skills to
offer. The Career Ready Internship Program offers employers access to these
students’ talents and fresh ideas.”
UW-Stevens
Point has already partnered with Skyward, Inc., Sentry Insurance, the Boys and
Girls Club of Portage County, the Stevens Point YMCA and other area businesses
and nonprofit organizations for internships relevant to eligible students’
courses of study.
“Paid
internships benefit students, colleges and employers,” said Richard George,
Great Lakes president and chief executive officer. “Students gain meaningful
workplace skills and are more likely to earn degrees and use their internship
experiences to help secure good jobs upon graduation. Colleges will see
increased competition and job placement rates and employers gain a pipeline of
fresh talent. It’s a win-win-win.”
