Discover a fun way to use geographic information systems as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point marks National GIS Day Wednesday, Nov. 15.
The public is invited to a free campus geocaching event between 2 and 5 p.m. Participants may start at the first floor east lobby of the Science Building anytime during the event. For all ages, geocaching is a worldwide sport that teaches navigation through hiding and seeking containers using maps and global positioning system (GPS) receivers. The course takes 30-45 minutes.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Geography and Geology and the GIS Center and offers prizes and entry into a drawing for a $50 gift card for those who find all the caches. No advance registration is required. Adults should supervise younger children.
Local geocaching expert Mindy Borchardt will be on site from 3-4:15 p.m. to talk to the public about geocaching etiquette, social aspects, the Wisconsin Geocaching Association and any questions participants have about the sport. Christine Koeller of the GIS Center will also offer her expertise.
That evening, learn about career options in GIS as the UW-Stevens Point GeoClub hosts several professionals from 5-6 p.m. in Science Building Room A201. It is free and open to the public. Speakers include:
- Andrea Bohn, GIS coordinator, Toth and Associates, Springfield, Mo.
- Jeff Hartman, GIS coordinator, Portage County
- Andy Faust, GIS analyst, North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission
