UW-Stevens Point Timbersports Team to defend championship

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Timbersports Team will defend its championship on home turf this April at the Midwestern Foresters’ Conclave.

The team of 20 UW-Stevens Point students will compete against 115 other students from eight universities on April 13 and 14 at the Treehaven Field Station outside of Tomahawk.

Events include cross cut sawing, wood chopping, axe throwing and log rolling on an L-shape land course. Success in academic events such as tree and wood identification and inventory techniques are also components of a conclave win. Events are individual and team based.

“In addition to being a very active and fun competition, there are professional and career components to the conclave,” said Paul Doruska, associate professor of forestry at UW-Stevens Point. “Students have the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences, developing leadership and teamwork skills, networking with potential employers and fellow students, and hearing from industry experts during the forestry career panel.”

The event is free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own seating. Pets are not allowed on the Treehaven property, so please leave pets at home.

The conclave concludes with the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series Midwest qualifier event awarding both collegiate and professional titles. Ben Hansen, a sophomore majoring in forest management and minoring in soil science, will represent UW-Stevens Point in the collegiate qualifier. UW-Stevens Point alumnus Adam LaSalle will compete for the professional title. Winners of the Professional and Collegiate Series will advance to the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series U.S. and Collegiate Championships at The Great Smokey Mountain Lumberjack Feud in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. June 1-3. For more information visit Midwest Qualifier Release.
