Flutists
of all ages and abilities may join professional musicians from several states
for workshops, performances and music vendors as the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point presents the 13th Annual Wisconsin Flute
Festival.
The
event, themed “The Free-Flying Flutist,” will be held Saturday, March 5, at the
Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. Guest artist Jim Walker
will present a “Jazz with Jim” flute choir reading session and master class as
well as a free, public concert at 5 p.m. in Michelsen Hall.
Walker
has served as principal flutist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is a founding
member of the jazz quartet Free Flight and a first-call flutist for many
Hollywood film scores. He is a faculty member at the Colburn School
Conservatory of Music and University of Southern California Thornton School of
Music.
The event also
includes:
- Young Artist and Collegiate competitions
- A recital of German works for flute and “How I
Warm Up” workshop by retired UW-Stevens Point Professor Paul Doebler, who will
be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Flute
FestivalP
- Performances from professional flutists,
UW-Stevens Point faculty and community and student ensembles
- A variety of workshops hosted by professional
flutists
- Flute choir reading sessions
Registration is $20 for adults
