UW-Stevens Point publishing house launches book

A student-run publishing company at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will debut a novel written by a university alumna on Thursday, Dec. 15, in Stevens Point.

Cornerstone Press will host a book launch party at 7:30 p.m. at the Dreyfus University Center Encore Room on campus for its newest title, “Whipped, Not Beaten,” authored by 1993 graduate Melissa Westemeier. The event will include a meet-and-greet with Westemeier, a reading by the author, booths for various home item vendors and refreshments. It is free and open to the public.

“Whipped, Not Beaten” tells the story of Sadie Davis, who is craving change for her life in Madison. Finding herself in a dead-end job and seemingly done with love, she takes a chance and grabs hold of a new opportunity selling kitchenware, hoping it will be the spice that turns her life around. Through failed recipes and cold ovens, Sadie works to create something that’s a bit sweeter, a lot richer and oh, so very delicious.

Westemeier is also the co-author of “Writing in a Changing World” and is currently working on a trilogy about a river town in Wisconsin. She earned a master’s degree from UW-Madison and is also a second-degree black belt in karate. She lives in Appleton with her husband and their three sons.

Cornerstone Press is run by students taking the Editing and Publishing course at UW-Stevens Point, taught by Assistant Professor of English Per Henningsgaard. The class has published 31 novels to date, including “Wildflowers of Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest,” “Fugitive From Spanish Fascism” and “The Illustrated College Survival Guide” written by New York Times bestselling author and UW-Stevens Point alumnus Patrick Rothfuss.
