UW-Stevens Point lecture explores how society and science fiction overlap

From television shows like "The Twilight Zone" to "Black Mirror," the genre of science fiction continues to provide a snapshot of where society is headed. Learn more at a free lecture offered by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

"Understanding Society Through Science Fiction" will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, by David Barry, associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work. Held in the Pinery Room of the Portage County Public Library, this is the fourth talk in the eight-part 2019-2020 Community Lecture Series. The public may attend free of charge.

"This talk explores the way social science and science fiction have always been intertwined," said Barry.

Barry received bachelor's degrees in sociology and history from Albion College before earning his master's and doctorate from Western Michigan University. His research interests include sociology of religion, globalization, social theory, post-communist societies and environmental sociology.
