Contemporary Chinese art and culture to be highlighted at UW-Stevens Point

Contemporary Chinese art and culture will be the focus of a month-long exhibition and program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from February 2 through March 10.

The College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) will host a special exhibition, “COFAC Creates: Xu Bing—The Art and Rewriting China,” in the Edna Carlsten Gallery of the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage Street, from February 13 to March 10, featuring the work of contemporary Chinese artist Xu Bing. An accompanying interdisciplinary program of lectures, workshops, films and performances will offer the UW-Stevens Point campus and community an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Chinese art and culture.

Xu Bing, visiting from Beijing, China, and additional guest lecturers will give a series of hands-on workshops and presentations. The famed Lily Cai Dance Company from San Francisco and the Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera troupe from New York City will also offer performances and a Chinese film festival will run during the series.  A full calendar of events is available online.

As part of the UW-Stevens Point Performing Arts Series, the Lily Cai Dance Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Theatre@1800 (Sentry headquarters). Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $6 for youth and $4.50 for UW-Stevens Point students with ID. Tickets are available through the Information and Tickets Office, or by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378. The Lily Cai Dance Company melds ancient Chinese forms with modern dance, bridging the past to the contemporary with dazzling costumes, original music and multi-media designs.
