Natural resources students to exhibit research projects at symposium

Whitefish egg counts in Lake Michigan and an analysis of white-tail deer habitat in an urban environment are a few of the research projects natural resources students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will present on Friday, March 30.

The CNR Student Research Symposium 2012, now in its 13th year, will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the first floor of the Daniel O. Trainer Natural Resources Building (TNR). The event, sponsored by the College of Natural Resources with funding support from the John R. Meyer Endowment for the CNR, is open to the public free of charge. Light refreshments will be available.

The symposium will feature the work of 78 students—the largest number of participants in the history of the event—who have conducted research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors. There will be 42 poster displays and 21 oral presentations covering a broad range of topics including a comparison of national water policy in the U.S. vs. Germany, and controlling compost tea acidity and electrical conductivity for use in deep water culture hydroponics.

Oral presentations will be held from 10:20 a.m.  to noon and 1:35 to 3:30 p.m. in Rooms 120 and 170 of the TNR Building. Poster presentations will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. along the southwest and northeast corridors on the first floor of the TNR building.

Historically, the event has featured a high level of quality in undergraduate research, and this year’s symposium is characterized by a high level of diversity of student interests, projects and topics. Nearly 700 students have presented their research at the symposium since its inception in 2000. Brian Luedtke, a senior from Hastings, Minn., majoring in urban forestry, and Patrick Otero, a senior from Mequon majoring in environmental education and interpretation, are student co-chairs of the event. Rich Hauer, associate professor and discipline coordinator of forestry, is faculty adviser for the event.
