UW-Stevens Point offers economics workshop for high school teachers
Teachers of high school history, social studies and economics will learn practical classroom skills for teaching financial crises at a workshop offered by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, June 27.
“Teaching Financial Crises” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UW-Stevens Point Wausau Education Center, 200 Washington Street, Suite 100, in downtown Wausau. Sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point Center for Economic Education (CEE) and the nonprofit organization EconomicsWisconsin, the workshop will give teachers lessons and exercises they can use in their classrooms that address Wisconsin Academic Standards for social studies in economics. Speakers will provide teachers with a framework to contextualize the current economic crisis as well as historic financial crises.
Workshop organizer Tracy Hofer is a professor of economics at UW-Stevens Point and director of the CEE. Her expertise is in international economics, macroeconomic theory and political economy. Presenters will include Paul Cibaric, a social studies teacher from Stevens Point Area Senior High School, and Michelle Vinje, a social studies teacher at D.C. Everest Senior High School.
The workshop cost is $25 per participant and includes the grades 9-12 curriculum “Teaching Financial Crises,” lunch, refreshments and parking. Participants may earn one undergraduate or graduate credit from UW-Stevens Point at an additional cost.
