Photography courses offered through UW-Stevens Point

Improve your digital photography skills through courses offered in the coming months through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Continuing Education Arts and Culture Outreach program.

A new course, “Finding Your Photographic Voice,” is among the three courses on digital photography offered during the spring semester for both teens and adults. Each course is taught by Spyros Heniadis, who has been teaching photography for more than six years and studying photography for more than a decade.

  • Digital Photography 101, held at 6-8 p.m. on the Mondays of Jan. 23 through February 20, is a beginning class for single lens reflex (SLR) digital camera users, covering basic and advanced camera functions, photographic composition, editing and organizing images on a computer. A class field trip/photo shoot is included on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 8-10 a.m. The cost is $89.

  • Finding Your Photographic Voice, offered at 6-8 p.m. on Mondays, Feb. 27 through April 2 (no class on March 19), will give participants the chance to delve deeper into photography and the images created, to find a theme and story that unifies them. A portfolio will be created that represents the photographer’s voice through a series of assignments that will challenge as well as hone skills. The course is assignment focused, with time spent discussing and reviewing student work. While the course is not technically focused, participants should have a working knowledge of camera functions. The fee is $69.

  • Digital Flash Photography, held at 6-8 p.m. the Mondays of April 9-May 14, is for advanced SLR users and covers flash fundamentals, automatic flash photography, manual flash photography, use of a hotshoe flash (speedlite) and using a flash on and off the camera. Participants should have an understanding of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, metering modes and manual mode. They should also have an SLR camera with a flash hotshoe and manual modes (program, aperture priority and shutter priority) as well as a speedlite for in-class photography and assignments. The fee is $89.
