Tobacco-Free Campus
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will join more than 700 other college campuses across the United States when it becomes a tobacco-free campus on August 25, 2014. Smoking and the use of tobacco products will be prohibited on all campus grounds.
The decision to become tobacco-free was made after carefully considering views of hundreds of students, faculty and staff. The decision-making process included:
- a spring 2013 Student Government Association (SGA) tobacco policy referendum, resulting in 70 percent of respondents favoring a tobacco-free campus,
- a survey in May and June 2013, showing faculty and staff were overwhelmingly in favor of a tobacco-free campus,
- surveys of students, faculty and staff showing they were against maintaining the current policy, which allows smoking in designated areas outdoors,
- a University Affairs Committee recommendation and Faculty Senate support for a tobacco-free campus,
- three open forums in fall 2013, and
- an SGA vote supporting a tobacco-free campus.
UW-Stevens Point acknowledges and supports the findings of the surgeon general that tobacco use in any form, active and passive, is a significant health hazard. The purposes of the policy are to reduce harm from secondhand smoke, provide an environment encouraging people to be tobacco-free, establish a campus culture of wellness and environmental responsibility, and promote a tobacco-free future.
UW-Stevens Point offers students cessation assistance through the Student Health Services. Students, faculty and staff may also find assistance on the cessation resources page.
