Quality Matters (QM)

Quality Matters is a nonprofit organization that strives to promote and assure quality in online learning. QM's mission, as defined on the QM webpage, is to "Promote and improve the quality of online education and student learning nationally and internationally."

The Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning (CITL) at UWSP purchases a Higher Education Basic Subscription to QM annually. Through this subscription, CITL is able to provide all UWSP faculty and staff with:

  • QM login credentials that provide full access to the myQM web portal
  • Access to the Course Review Management System (CRMS) through which instructors can complete a Self-Review of their courses using the QM Higher Education Rubric
  • Access to QM materials and resources
  • Discounted rates on professional development
Eric Simkins is the Quality Matters Coordinator (QMC) for UWSP. Please email Eric at eric.simkins@uwsp.edu if you have questions or would like a personal QM account created.

Currently, CITL staff use QM resources to assist with course design and quality assurance. All Online Course Development Grant recipients complete the Quality Matters Designing Your Online Course (DYOC) workshop prior to starting course design with CITL staff. In the workshop, recipients learn about the QM organization, are exposed to the QM rubric, and develop one course module while applying the QM alignment principles. The knowledge gained by participants provides a great foundation for the course design process and promotes more efficient design throughout the process. Many other workshops are also available.

Additionally, all courses that receive design support from CITL are reviewed using the full QM Higher Education Rubric. The review process is an unofficial QM review lead by CITL staff. During this process, two CITL staff members and the instructor each complete a QM Self-Review of the course, meet to discuss review outcomes, and work to make improvements as needed.
